Quranic Evidence for the Excellence of Knowledge
Al-Ghazali opens Section 1 by presenting thirteen Quranic verses that establish the supreme value and excellence of knowledge (ILM), demonstrating how God elevated people of knowledge above others in rank, honour, and nearness to Him.
On the Value of Knowledge, Instruction, and Learning together with its evidence in tradition and from reason. The excellence of knowledge The evidence for the excellence of knowledge in the Qur'an is manifest in the words of God:
"God bears witness that there is no god but He, and the angels, and men endued with knowledge, established in righteousness."
Surah ali-imran, Ayah 18
See, then, how God has mentioned Himself first, the angels second, and men endowed with knowledge third. In this you really have honour, excellence, distinction and rank. And again God said:
"O you who believe, when it is said to you, “Make room (for others) in the sittings”, then make room, and Allah will make room for you (in the Hereafter). And when it is said, “Rise up”, then rise up, and Allah will raise those, in ranks, who have believed and are given knowledge. Allah is well-aware of what you do."
Surah al-mujadila, Ayah 11
According to Ibn-'Abbas the learned men rank seven hundred grades above the believers; between each two of which is a distance five hundred years long. (Ibn-'Abbas: 'Abdullah, cousin of the Prophet; d. A.H. 68/A.D. 687–88. See al-Dhahabi, Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, Vol. I, p. 37.) Said God:
"Can (such people be equal to) the one who worships during the hours of night, prostrating himself and standing, fearing the Hereafter and having hopes in his Lord’s mercy? Say, “Can those who know and those who do not know become equal?” It is only the people of understanding who are receptive of the advice."
Surah az-zumar, Ayah 9
