What is Tawheed? The Core Principle

Tawheed is the foundation of Islamic faith — affirming that Allah is One, without partner or rival. Surah Al-Ikhlas is its clearest Quranic expression. Ibn Kathir explains that Al-Ahad means singular with no peer, no assistant, no rival, no equal, and none comparable. As-Samad means all creation depends upon Him for their needs.

Tawheed is the foundation of the entire Islamic faith. It means affirming that Allah is One — without partner, without equal, and without rival — in His Lordship, His right to be worshipped, and in His Names and Attributes. The clearest Quranic expression of Tawheed is Surah Al-Ikhlas — which the Prophet described as equivalent to one-third of the Quran.

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

"Say, 'He is God the One,"

Surah , Ayah

اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ

"God the eternal."

Surah , Ayah
